Who should book follow-ups?

Follow-up consultations are used to reassess your injury and progress or change your treatment plan. You should use a follow-up session if you want further treatment or advice for an injury that you have already diagnosed through our clinic, and your previous or latest consultation with one of our physios regarding this injury was no longer than three months ago.

Injuries can vary a lot in severity and heal at very different rates. A treatment plan has to be adjusted and progressed according to how the injury responds to treatment. It is entirely up to you to decide when and how often you want to continue with treatment, but your physio will be able to advise you on the best strategy to use.

If more than three months have passed since your last physiotherapy appointment, your physio will most likely have to complete another full initial consultation. This is because our bodies and circumstances change a lot in three months, and we would risk missing important information if we do not follow this process.

What to expect during your physio consultation

Your physiotherapist will first ask you some questions to get a deeper understanding of your injury and symptoms, your lifestyle, and your goals. This is followed by a physical examination.

The physical examination will consist of two parts:

  • Your physio will demonstrate specific movement tests over video call and then ask you to repeat them. The tests are similar to the ones used in clinics and will help to identify and establish what structures you have injured as well as test your muscle strength, flexibility, and control.
  • They will then guide you through a palpation examination and get you to examine different parts of your body by hand to distinguish between different ligaments, muscles, and bones.

Your physiotherapist will use the information from the interview and the physical examination to provide you with a diagnosis of your injury. They will then compile a detailed treatment plan specific to your needs.

You will practice all the self-treatment techniques and exercises via video call with your physio to ensure that you are doing them correctly. You will also receive a written report summarising the examination findings and treatment plan, as well as pictures/videos of the exercises included in your treatment plan. You will be able to contact your physio during the following weeks if you experience any problems with the treatment plan or have other questions.

Your physiotherapist may feel that you require further investigation of your condition in the form of blood tests, X-rays or MRI scans. If this is the case, they will ask your permission to write to your GP to request this. Your physio will never communicate with your GP or anyone else unless you give them written permission to do so.

The treatment plan will include everything you should do for the next few weeks. It is up to you whether you continue with treatment after this, but your treatment programme will have to be adjusted as your injury heals to achieve full recovery.

No physio can provide a treatment programme that will guarantee a full recovery since injuries heal at different rates for different people. You can book follow-up sessions which will be used to reassess your injury and provide you with an adjusted treatment and training programme. Please feel free to ask us first  if you have any questions about the online treatment process.
